Description of Services

JR Marine Survey offers various services ranging from comprehensive pre-purchase surveys to walk-through reviews, inspections, and consulting.

Surveys

Depending upon the type of survey, vessel size, type and age, a survey may take from several hours to a full day or more. The person requesting the survey (client) is encouraged to be present but this is not necessary. It will be necessary to obtain permission to board from the owner or owner’s representative (broker or captain), who must also be aboard for any sea trial.

The surveyor will not operate, or assist in operation of, the vessel for a sea trial.

Upon completion of the on-board survey JR Marine Survey will prepare a complete and detailed report describing the vessel as observed on the survey date by system, withphotographs, and a list of detailed findings and recommendations. Each report is prepared specifically for the subject vessel and not from a pre-programmed format. The report will be completed within 5 days of the survey and will be emailed to the client. This report becomes the exclusive property of the client and will not be reproduced or provided to others without the client’s written permission.

 Pre-Purchase Survey
This is the most comprehensive type of inspection, and is strongly advised when purchasing a new or used vessel. Condition and the overall operation of the vessel will be examined. This includes such items as structural integrity, out of water inspection, electrical systems, propulsion system, fuel system, machinery, navigation, cosmetic appearance, electronics, documentation, and overall maintenance. A haul-out to permit inspection of the wetted surface and a sea trial are usually required for a complete pre-purchase survey. These should all be scheduled for the same day to avoid additional charges.

Insurance Survey
This inspection is performed to enable the insurance company to determine whether or not the vessel is an acceptable risk. The focus is usually on structural integrity and safety for its intended use although many companies require a full pre-purchase level of inspection and reporting. The company will also require the vessel’s fair market value.

Appraisal Survey
This inspection is performed to gather enough information to justify or determine the fair market value of the vessel. This is normally required for financing, estate settlements, donations, and legal cases.

Damage Survey
This is performed to assess the nature, scope and cause of damage and to recommend repairs and estimate repair cost.

Inspections and Analysis

Walk Through Inspection
This is a preliminary inspection of a vessel to determine whether or not a full pre-purchase survey is warranted for the buyer’s consideration.
This is useful when the vessel is located at some distance from the potential buyer who wants to avoid unnecessary travel.

Moisture Content Analysis
A detailed analysis of the requested portion of the vessel, (decks, hull, superstructure, etc.) using non-destructive percussion and capacitance moisture meters. This reveals the degree of moisture penetration of hull laminates and cores and permits estimation of the scope of the problem and the point of ingress of the moisture. A detailed report is produced with photographic documentation and narrative analysis.

Oil Analysis
This analysis will detect contaminants in the oil such as water or antifreeze and can also detect internal wear of the engine. Lab results usually emailed within three days.
